‘Use one man, one vote to elect top leaders’

PKR delegates want her to keep post until there is a change in the country’s leadership

-

SHAH ALAM: PKR should consider using the “one man, one vote” to elect top positions in the party, says outgoing PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

Nik Nazmi said the party should revert to the delegates system for other positions.

“Maybe the top positions such as president, deputy and vice-presidents should be elected through the one member, one vote system. For the rest, the delegates system.

“No other party in the world does this. They only elect their number one leader through the one man, one vote system. There are none as brave as PKR,” he said during his speech at the 13th PKR national congress yesterday.

Nik Nazmi claimed that many PKR members were unhappy with irregularities that took place throughout the nine-week party polls.

He also said that it was impractical to vote for every other position in the party through the one man, one vote system because there were simply too many votes to count.

SHAH ALAM: The PKR national congress unanimously approved a motion for Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to remain as deputy prime minister despite no longer being the party president.

PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said it was in line with Pakatan Harapan’s agreement in the run-up to GE14 which named Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the Prime Minister and Dr Wan Azizah as Deputy Prime Minister.

The agreement also named Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the candidate for the country’s eighth prime minister.

“I wish to move a motion for Dr Wan Azizah to remain as deputy prime minister until there is a change in the country’s leadership,” he said in his winding-up speech yesterday.

The delegates instantaneously stood up and exclaimed “agree” in unison.

Dr Wan Azizah in her final speech as president told party leaders and members to be prepared for the Sarawak state elections.

“The state elections might take place in a year or two and I want our party leaders to be prepared.

“PKR’s efforts to capture Sarawak must be prepared early.

“This is to ensure that the welfare of Sarawakians are taken care of when we capture the state, like Sabah,” she said.

At the same time, she said Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Perlis must not be neglected and PKR must ramp up its efforts in reaching out to the people in those states.

“We need more engagement with them. We shouldn’t neglect the people in these states.

“Help these people and I believe that in the 15th General Election, these states will become ours,” she said.

Dr Wan Azizah also said the reformasi agenda was a continuing process and it must be supported by all members

“We must unite and maintain the strength of our relationship because the bigger agenda is to implement reforms in the administration of the states and federal government,” she said.
