Alor Gajah hit by flash floods

-

MELAKA: Flash floods hit several areas in Alor Gajah and Melaka Tengah following heavy rain, forcing the evacuation of 239 families.

The downpour, which lasted for several hours, started at 1.30am yesterday.

Among the affected areas were Kampung Gadek, Tanjung Rimau Luar, Kampung Padang Sebang and Kampung Bukit Mechat.

State Civil Defence Force director Lt-Kol Effendy Ali said a total of 868 residents from 15 villages sought temporary shelter at eight relief centres.

Several agencies, including the police, were monitoring the situation closely as several rivers in Alor Gajah had breached the dangerous level.

However, he said flood waters in some other areas had receded.
