SHAH ALAM: Award-winning singer and actress Ziana Zain was given a warning by a magistrate’s court here after she issued an apology for her actions that was tantamount to contempt of court.

“I hereby tender my apology and I have no intention to commit contempt of court, as for me, it was not more than a personal matter.

“I promise not to repeat it,” said Ziana, 50, before magistrate Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin here yesterday.

The magistrate also held that the applicant had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that there was an element of contempt of court involved.

The contempt of court application was filed by her ex-husband Armin Zaharin Ahmad Zambri, 53, in July this year.

According to Armin’s lawyer Mohd Amin Farid Nawawi, his client filed the application following a few press conferences as well as a magazine interview given by Ziana.

He said comments which were made in the press conferences and article centred around a child abuse allegation levelled against Armin.

“Whatever she said touched on his character, which is an issue in the case.

“The respondent should not have released any information relevant to the case because it would result in a trial by media,” said Mohd Amin.

Armin was charged in March with voluntarily causing hurt to their 10-year-old son by allegedly whipping the boy with a cane at a house in Denai Alam here on Feb 25.

He claimed trial under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of a maximum 10 years’ jail or a fine or whipping, or any two of the punishments upon conviction.

Armin and Ziana, whose real name is Siti Roziana Zain, ended their 20-year marriage in July.
