KUALA LUMPUR: Terrific trio Phoon Eyin, Loh Ying Ting and Tan Cheong Min capped a glorious end to Malaysia’s campaign at the Taolu World Cup by winning the women’s duilian (duel) event in Yangon, Myanmar.

The trio gave an intense display to come out tops with a score of 9.27 points.

Macau’s Yi Li-Cho Man Sou won the silver with 9.20 while the United States duo of Lucy Lee and Mia Tian took the bronze with 8.75.

A country can either field two or three exponents to perform using a variety of weapons. The trio qualified for the World Cup

by virtue of winning gold at the World Wushu Championships in Kazan, Russia, last year.

Audrey Chan also picked up a bronze in the women’s taijiquan (taiji sword) event with her score of 9.61 points.

Malaysia ended their campaign in the Taolu World Cup with a total of five golds, one silver and two bronzes. The other medals came from Wong Weng Son (two golds), Phoon Eyin (two golds) and Cheong Ming (one sil-

ver and one bronze).

At the inaugural Taolu World Cup in Fuzhou, China, two years ago, Malaysia also picked up eight medals – one gold, five silvers and two bronzes. The only gold medal at that time came from Weng Son in the men’s jianshu (sword).

All four women exponents who qualified for the meet stood on the podium and national coach Lim Yew Fai was very pleased with his charges’ performance.

“They made no mistakes and their performance was good. It has been hard this year because we did not get good results at the Asian Games. But I’m happy they continued to work hard,” said Yew Fai.

“I want to thank my athletes as the second half of the year has been tiring due to many competitions.

“We still have the Asean University Games (in Myanmar next month) and I hope they will continue to work hard to bring good results for the country.”
