Basic skills thanks to programme

-

UP TO 100 children and teenagers aged five to 16 from Chinese vernacular schools in Kuala Selangor have graduated with basic reading skills in Bahasa Malaysia.

This follows the completion of the 20-day intensive iSina JomBaca Programme conducted by teachers from iSina Global Media using a coaching method, which focuses on phonetics and recognition of alphabets.

The programme was developed by iSina Global Media founder Rahmalizah Ali, with an objective of creating an efficient platform of learning the basic reading skills of the national language.

This literacy programme is specially organised for children and adults who face difficulties in reading and understanding the Malay language.

It helps them to assimilate and cope better with the education system as well as understanding and using the language in their daily lives.

“The Malay language cannot be mastered by memorising. They need to understand what has been read,” said Rahmalizah.

She said it is heart-warming to see the progression of the reading skills among the children and teenagers within the 20 days. The children were given certificates of achievement in a graduation ceremony.

The programme has to date benefited 514 students and young adults this year. They are from poor households and communities.

All programmes are carried out based on voluntary sponsorships both by individuals or corporate organisations to cover costs such as learning materials and allowances for the teachers.
