AN Indian single mother of two in Sungai Petani, who was about to be evicted from her home, found help from neighbours and the management of a supermarket in the area, Malaysia Nanban reported.

S. Susila said her family had been ordered to vacate their low-cost flat in Paya Nahu.

Their food supply had exhausted and they have been living on food provided by sympathetic neighbours.

An NGO named Sooriyan Welfare Association is working to find the family an alternative house and has helped register Susila’s children at SJK(T) Arumugam Pillai.

The single mother and her two children were also invited to the Econsave supermarket in Sungai Petani Jaya by the management, where they received household items and groceries worth more than RM1,000.

> The daily also reported two state election officials in Rajasthan, India, have been suspended after an electronic voting machine was found abandoned by the roadside.

The Rajasthan state elections took place on Friday and saw a 72.62% voter turnout.

On Friday night, residents in Shahabad were surprised to see what appeared to be a voting machine lying by the roadside and contacted the police.

The authorities recovered the equipment and confirmed that it was a voting machine which had been used in the Friday’s elections.

The machine contained voting records from a nearby constituency.

The election commission suspended the two officers responsible for the machine.
