KUALA LUMPUR: About 30 years ago, the Kristus Aman Chapel in Taman Tun Dr Ismail gathered a group of youths to spread the message of love and give back to society.

Every year, throughout the month of December, they perform at the homes of parishioners and commercial places.

Till today, they are still doing it passionately.

“Christmas carolling creates a space for people to grow their talents but more importantly, it helps to build close relationships with one another.

“Nothing can be more satisfying than doing what they love while being able to raise some funds for charity,” said Kristus Aman Youth Ministry (KAYM) president Melissa Neoh.

Neoh described the dedication of the carollers as “admirable”, saying that they continued to bear the torch in raising funds for youth programmes and underprivileged centres.

Caroller Jynn Kok E-Lynn said it was great to be able to play a part in helping the community.

“We are capable of helping others even though we may be young,” Kok said.

Another peer Charmaine Goh, who had taken part for a good 15 years, said they were all united by one cause to spread the joy, love and spirit of Christmas.

The team comprising about 30 singers and guitarists, aged between 13 and 30, would start rehearsing in September with the help of seniors and more experienced carollers.

“We also like to include our own twist to the usual Christmas carols, which makes us unique,” said Carlos Dourado, who is part of the organising committee of the KAYM carollers.

A newcomer, Amber Sambhi, admitted to feeling awkward at first.

“I did mess up quite a bit but because the others were very patient and helpful, I learned up most of my parts in no time. We had a lot of fun,” said Sambhi.

This year, the donations they collect will go to their youth activities and the Divine Mercy Boys Home, an orphanage in Kepong.

Throughout the years, KAYM has also been conducting regular outreach activities in Zotung Refugee Catholic Learning Centre, including teaching catechism classes, carolling and buying provisions for the children.
