PETALING JAYA: A new rice porridge stall is gaining a following for putting a twist on the wellloved comfort food.

One of the stall owners also has folks talking about his positive take on life.

Friends Ahmad Maembong and Muhammad Azwan Jainuddin started Bubur Abang Wheelchair – a stall which offers curry and rendang-flavoured porridge – in September.

According to Ahmad, who is wheelchair-bound, the aroma of the curry and sambal ikan bilis accompaniment make the curry porridge stand out.

“What’s interesting is that we will also put in sambal tumis ikan bilis (fried sambal with anchovies) and sprinkle fried onions on the porridge.

“If you like it spicy, you can request for extra sambal,” he said.

Customers also enjoy Abang Wheelchair’s rendang porridge, he said.

Rendang is known as a special Hari Raya delicacy but his customers can have the rendang porridge at any time.

“Most of us love rendang and while we usually eat it with nasi

impit (pressed rice), I wanted to introduce something new and decided to pair it with rice porridge,” Ahmad told mStar.

He added that he did not expect his customers to love the combination so much.

Ahmad said his status as a person with disability did not stop him from wanting to provide for himself.

The business started from the need to raise funds for Muhammad Azwan’s father’s medical treatment.

“I am close to Wan’s (Azwan) father as his family is like my own family.

“His parents are both people with disabilities.

“His father has always helped me, even assisted in repairing my wheelchair.

“He (Azwan’s father) suffered a stroke and Wan had to quit his job to take care of him.

“As his mother is a good cook, we started this business to raise money for his father’s medical bills,” he said.

Bubur Abang Wheelchair is located in front of Restoran RM Saribu in Sri Rampai, Wangsa Maju, and offers home delivery within a 15km radius of the stall.

Customers can order through WhatsApp and pay with cash upon delivery.
