Singapore causeway traffic worrying
JOHOR BARU: Johor MCA handed over a letter to the Singapore consulate expressing concerns over the traffic congestion at the Causeway and the Second Link.
Its Youth chief Ling Tian Soon said the letter was written in response to overwhelming complaints from travellers, especially those commuting to Singapore routinely for work.
“The congestion has been going on for years. Malaysia and Singapore need to work together to solve the issue as it affects both countries and their citizens,” he said after delivering the letter to the Singapore consulate here accompanied by eight other members of Johor MCA.
Apart from calling for an end to the commuters’ traffic woes, the letter also included suggestions to ease the travel backlog at the checkpoints on both sides of the Johor Straits, said Ling.
“Singapore and Malaysia are very dependent on each other in many ways including in economic growth.
“It is imperative for the two countries to look into this matter objec- tively and have discourse on ways to improve it,” he said.
While there are no official statistics on the number of motorists using the Johor Causeway and Second Link, unofficial records show some 300,000 Malaysians, mostly motorcyclists, travel to Singapore daily, with 100,000 of them using the Johor Causeway.
The congestion worsens during the holiday season.
