NIBONG TEBAL: He’s a Mr Fix It with a big heart.

Whenever mechanic Mohd Nasir Mohd Shariff gets a call from people whose car has broken down by the roadside, he would rush over to help but without imposing hefty charges.

It is up to the car owner to pay him any amount as labour fee, he said, adding he only charges for the car parts replaced.

“I sincerely just want to help. “If there are any parts that need replacing, I will purchase them from reputable dealers to ensure a fair price. I will also help the car owner replace the parts.

“I’m not seeking to be a rich and famous mechanic. I just want to be helpful to others in need,” he said when met at the Sungai Bakap rest area, where he was fixing a car on Saturday.

Mohd Nasir, 49, said his car is loaded with tools for almost any kind of common repairs.

“I’m ready to help anyone who is stranded by the road, including those on the North-South Expressway. I can even help tow your car.

“I am available 24 hours daily,” said Mohd Nasir, whose services usually cover the area between Nibong Tebal on mainland Penang and Sungai Petani in Kedah.

However, he once travelled to as far as Ipoh to repair a car.

Mohd Nasir said he used to run a workshop about 20 years ago but quit the business after finding it hard to manage his workers.

“If I am unable to fix a breakdown that is too severe, I will help tow the car to somewhere safer first.

“Most of the time, the cars break down because parts such as the alternator or distributor failed while on the road.

“Engine overheating due to leaking radiators are also common, and sometimes car owners need help with replacing punctured tyres,” said Mohd Nasir.

He added that most of the calls he receives come in at night.

The father of 11 children also said he would sometimes bring along his wife and a few of their children when he gets a call for help while they are out together.

“I hope to raise enough money to open a new workshop where I can serve my customers better and also for my family to live comfortably,” he said.
