Solutions needed for worsening city traffic

TRAFFIC congestion in and around city centres are grooming more road bullies and traffic rule flouters.

This is compounded by the numerous road and construction work which exacerbates the situation.

There seems to be a never-ending stream of cars appearing on the roads with the volume increasing exponentially.

Motorists are taking matters into their own hands and utilising emergency lanes to manoeuvre their way in when there is a gap. One needs to have the patience of a saint when these acts unfold before you.

It is imperative that we who are adversely affected by this, voice our disapproval and demand our rights.

One case in point is the massive development in Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur.

The sea of cars stuck exiting or entering this area is outrageous. The traffic gridlock is so heavy that the residents are stuck within the parameters of their housing area for an interminable time before traffic eases.

Since no respite or reprieve seems to be forthcoming, it will be worthwhile to put into place some concrete measures in the interim.

More traffic police should be stationed at exit / entry points while pictures of traffic rule flouters including illegally parked vehicles should be posted online to curb such practices.

There should be more shuttle/ feeder buses from residential areas to LRT/MRT stations and the frequency should be increased.

Some roads should be converted to one way during peak hours while covered walkways to LRT / MRT stations should be also be built.

Connectivity should be improved to encourage more people to use public transport.
