It was a vicious start to the day for a woman who was on her way to work at 6.45am.

A robber assaulted her mercilessly inside a lift at the MRT station in Cheras, prompting the Kuala Lumpur police chief to set up a 200-strong task force to catch the criminal.

The 48-year-old woman suffered multiple injuries, including bruises on her forehead after the savage attack on Valentine’s Day.

“We have recorded statements from the woman, the doctor who treated her, and another witness,” Kuala Lumpur CPO Comm Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim told a press conference at the Dang Wangi police district headquarters yesterday.

A CCTV recording shows the woman entering the lift, followed by the man, who then punched and kicked her repeatedly.

Kuala Lumpur CID chief Senior Asst Comm Rusdi Md Isa, when contacted, said the victim was given outpatient treatment at a nearby hospital.

The assailant escaped with her MyKad, ATM cards and RM400 in cash.

The case is classified under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt while committing a robbery.

Those with information could contact the KL police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or 03-2146 0522 or the nearest police station.

Malaysians who have viewed the CCTV recording are incensed.

Most of them called on the police to catch the culprit as soon as possible. Some of them even offered to “deal” with the robber themselves.

“After watching the video clip, my anger is really at the peak,” Ying Kuan Kam posted on Facebook.

Ranaith A. Simon wrote: “Catch him and please send him to me first; me and my friends would like to talk to him with our hands and feet.”

Another posting, from Philip Phuah Gim Sheng, said: “Police, please provide the photo of the suspect to the public. Let us all keep a look out for the suspect. Justice must be served.”
