Many Americans say they are hooking up online to find their true love, someone to celebrate many future Valentine’s Days with.

AS millions of people celebrated Valentine’s Day with their loved ones on Thursday, many of those who hadn’t found their significant other yet turned to dating apps to avoid spending the night alone.

But according to the Digital Market Outlook (DMO) by Statista, many Americans believe that online dating isn’t all about casual sex and promiscuity, despite its sometimes questionable image.

According to a recent YouGov poll, the most cited reason to use Tinder or any other dating app/website among Americans is finding an exclusive romantic partner, and on Feb 14, it is to look for a possible partner to celebrate many future Valentine’s Days with.

In fact, every second respondent is looking for something serious online, while only 23% are chasing after more casual acquaintances, the poll said.

According to YouGov’s findings, 32% of Americans have used a dating app at some point, with that share rising to 39% for GenXers and 44% for Millennials.

Unsurprisingly, the United States has the largest share of adults paying for a dating service in the world. DMO statistics show that over a quarter of Americans (26.4%) are spending their money on trying to find love – or a sexual encounter – online. United Kingdom has the second biggest number of online dating service users with 20.8% and Germany is third with 17%. Malaysia has 6.8% of adults paying for a dating service in the world.

The DMO analysts classify “dating services” as either “matchmaking”, “online dating”, or “casual dating”. The matchmaking market segment contains dating services for the search for life partners; online dating for easy flirting and chatting and casual dating for the search for non-committal sex.

However, although online dating apps and websites have come a long way over the past few years, those who haven’t used them still have a negative perception of dating services, describing them as “sad”, “pointless” or downright “dangerous”.

But those who have used online dating services such as Tinder have a much more positive image, ranking these apps and websites as “interesting”, “convenient” and “fun”.
