Passion drives the popular series

Annual international Mercedes-Benz golf challenge returns for another eventful year

-

MERCEDES-BENZ Malaysia have announced the return of their MercedesTrophy tournament series, an international event for brand owners with a passion for golf.

In all, about 1,000 MercedesBenz Malaysia customers are expected to participate in the tournament that will begin at Sutera Harbour Golf Club in Sabah next month and culminate with a national final at TPC Kuala Lumpur in June, before heading to Brisbane, Australia in August for the regional final. After that the tournament makes its way to Stuttgart, Germany for the world final in October.

Commenting on the event at the launch, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia president and chief executive officer Dr Claus Weidner said: “The MercedesTrophy is an exclusive international invitation tournament series for our customers who are golf enthusiasts.

“Now, more than 60,000 golfers in more than 60 countries tee off in this tournament every year. It was introduced in 1991.

“It has now established itself as an event taking place on every continent and to date, over a million Mercedes-Benz customers and fans have teed off in the MercedesTrophy,” added Weidner.

“Golf is a great sport that is played across all-age groups and in my opinion, it is one of the most fascinating and multifaceted sports there is,” he said. “It is well-balanced with a combination of leisure, competition and camaraderie among players over the course and after the game.

“Thus, the MercedesTrophy is a sporting event that reflects the brilliant connect of sports and lifestyle and underlines the premier status for the MercedesBenz brand,”he added.

Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur general manager Peter Hourigan said they were delighted to again be part of the event as a sponsor and looked forward to “an exciting and eventful” tournament.

“The MercedesTrophy is one of the best, if not the best, amateur tournaments in this country and the overwhelming response it received for the qualifying rounds last year is testament to the event’s popularity and strengths.

“That there will be nine qualifying rounds this year shows that it is here to stay and we are just so happy to be part it.

“I have played a few courses in the tournament over the years and it has always proved to be both enjoyable and challenging,” added Hourigan.

The top three players from each round will go through to the national final at TPC Kuala Lumpur.

The top two winners in each of the three handicap men’s categories and one winner of the ladies’ category at the national final will qualify for the Regional Final Asia, an all-expenses paid trip to Brisbane, Australia from Aug 6 to 9, 2019.

Thereafter, three Asian teams will be selected to represent the region in the MercedesTrophy World Finals in Stuttgart from Sept 30 to Oct 5.

The first player to achieve a hole-in-one at any of the two designated par-3s at each venue will drive away with the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC 200 worth RM293,888.

Other prizes include MercedesBenz exclusive merchandise and novelty prizes from the marketing partners who include Crestlink, EPOS Watches, TaylorMade, Saujana Hotel & Resort, Carlsberg, Kinslager, The Edge and the company’s financial services arm, Mercedes-Benz Services Malaysia.
