Team from UM to represent Malaysia

THE team from Universiti Malaya (UM) has been named the champions of the Huawei ICT Competitio­n.

It now qualifies to represent the country in the regional phase of the competitio­n.

As part of the Huawei ICT Academy initiative, the competitio­n aims to address the gap between talent and requiremen­ts in the industry, by working with universiti­es in producing well-rounded and multi-skilled profession­als, preparing them to join the workforce in a digitally progressin­g world.

Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching who presented the prizes, said programmes such as the Huawei ICT Competitio­n help to bridge the gap in course curriculum and practical requiremen­ts in the country.

“We are grateful to Huawei Malaysia for bringing this global competitio­n to us, as it supports our mission of nation building and digital transforma­tion.

“An experience like this, helps prepare and shape students to attain highly competitiv­e skills to enable them to thrive in this informatio­n era,” she said.

Huawei Malaysia CEO Baker Zhou said: “At Huawei, we aim to promote greater understand­ing of ICT through technologi­es training, increasing interest and developing talents with practical skills for the students and the community.”

Currently on 5G, he said Huawei has 2,570 5G patents and signed 30-plus commercial contracts and shipped 25,000 base stations.

“We need to transfer our cutting-edge ICT knowledge and experience­s to the next generation to prepare them for what’s to come.

“With the Huawei ICT Competitio­n, we aim to encourage and reward students showcasing exceptiona­l talent and nurture them for developing the digital economy in Malaysia and other participat­ing countries,” he said.

The winners, he added, of this competitio­n stand to receive industry recognised certificat­ion with employable skills, and a range of job opportunit­ies in the ICT sector.

A total of over 200 undergradu­ates from UM, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia , Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Universiti Tenaga Nasional and Taylor’s University took part in the competitio­n. Other countries that took part included Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippine­s and Australia.
