Selangor’s Segovia eyes big show against Elephants

-

SHAH ALAM: Selangor’s Rufino Segovia knows that he isn’t in his best form but has vowed to come good against Pahang at the Darulmakmur Stadium.

The Spaniard, who was the 2018 Super League top goal scorer, has only scored once– a penalty – in three matches and critics are blaming his under-par performances on his age.

However, the 33-year-old striker is out to make his critics eat their words.

“I only scored one goal in the first three games. Maybe against Pahang, I’ll score four – you’ll never know,” said Segovia.

“Yes, it has been a slow start. Last season, I started well, but now it’s different. Life, you have to know, is different every day.

“Selangor may have drawn the first two matches and lost the last game, but I believe we have what it takes to get out of the rut.”

Selangor are hoping that their key marksmen will come good against Pahang today as the Red Giants are looking to revive their season with a win.

Pahang have enjoyed a good season so far and are currently second in the standings with seven points. The Elephants beat Kuala Lumpur 3-1 and Terengganu 3-0 in their first two matches and drew 1-1 with Melaka at the Hang Jebat Stadium last week.

The Klang Valley side have three new sign- ings – Mohd Fandi Othman, Khyril Muhymeen and Sandro Mendonca – to galvanise the squad. Antonio German was released from the club due to poor performance.

For Segovia, no team, including Selangor, are perfect and he has urged the fans to stand behind the team.

“No team are perfect. The team need to improve and learn from their mistakes. Even 100% is not enough if we commit errors,” he said.

“To the fans, we’ll bounce back. We always keep a positive mindset. A defeat does not mean the end of the world. The team will stick together to ensure we achieve success in the league.”
