A passion for nursing

-

KAREN Low Jia Ling is passionate about touching peoples’ lives. She does this by helping out those who are in need and at the same time, tries to influence people with her positive vibes!

Low, 17, has just completed her first semester. She is studying a Diploma in Nursing at Nilai University. She used to be disorganised and lacked time management skills; but is now the opposite as she had to juggle her time between revision and clinical postings.

“Nursing has always been my passion.

“I chose Nilai University since searching for a job after our studies will not be a concern for nursing graduates.

“This is because every year, agents, will conduct interviews at the campus to select aspiring nursing graduates who wish to pursue their nursing careers in Singapore or other parts of the world,” she said.

She said living in Nilai is affordable as the cost of living and expenses are lower compared to other institutions, which are located in the city.

“Anyone would instantly fall in love with the beautiful campus surrounded by lush greenery, which offers the perfect atmosphere to study.

“Frankly speaking, living in a big city like Kuala Lumpur has always made me want to live in a quieter town such as Nilai,” said Low.

Just imagine, she said, waking up to the birds chirping instead of cars honking everywhere.

“It is just walking distance to classes. You don’t have to be caught in the traffic thinking you will be late for class again,” she said.

Nilai University, she added, has dedicated nursing lecturers with many years of experiences in the industry.

“They teach and ensure their students understand thoroughly. And if you don’t, they do not mind teaching you all over again!

“Where else can you find such lecturers except at Nilai University? They are the best!” said Low.

She has learned many life skills and communication skills in nursing and believes they are going to come in handy for the rest of her life.

“University life is academically challenging especially when you have just finished secondary school.

“It requires more effort when you need to juggle your studies, skills in the lab and social life.

“Besides, I am able to make many friends from different facul- ties and not just nursing,” she added.

She said Nilai University has shaped her to become an independent individual as she needs to live away from her family.

On her future plans, Low aspires to earn some experiences before embarking on her educational journey.

“I plan to work in a Singapore hospital as a registered nurse after my nursing board exam.

“After working for a few years, I will pursue a top-up degree or specialisation in nursing,” she said, adding that she would recommend Nilai University to her family and friends.

Low said Nilai University provides scholarships and financial aid for those who are facing financial difficulties but have a passion for nursing.

“The best part is there is no bond with any hospitals upon graduation and most importantly, it is well recognised by many Malaysian and Singapore hospitals,” she added.
