RCI to probe actions of authorities in Wang Kelian graves case
PUTRAJAYA: A seven-member Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) will be convened to investigate the procedures implemented by authorities during and after the discovery of human trafficking camps and graves in Wang Kelian, Perlis.
The commission, to be headed by former Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria, will also conduct an inquiry into the investigating officers, witnesses and other individuals deemed necessary.
Announcing the commission yesterday, the Home Ministry said the deputy chairman would be former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Norian Mai.
Other members are the former Heads of Prosecution and Research in the Attorney General’s Chambers Datuk Noorbahri Baharuddin and Datuk Junaidah Abdul Rahman, former Malaysian Ambassador to Thailand Datuk Nazirah Hussin and ex-Public Accounts Committee deputy chairman Dr Tan Seng Giaw.
Human Rights Commission of Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Razali Ismail will also sit on the panel.
The ministry said it had received the consent of the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah on Jan 29 to appoint the RCI members.
“The commission was set up in accordance with the government’s decision on Oct 26, 2018, for an investigation on a wider scope to be carried out into the case of human trafficking,” it said.
The RCI is expected to take six months and a report on its findings would be presented to the Yang diPertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, it said. — Bernama
