Vivian-Cheng Wen cruise into first q-final of the year

-

PETALING JAYA: National women’s doubles shuttlers Vivian HooYap Cheng Wen received a much needed confidence booster when they cruised into their first quarter-final appearance of the year at the Indian Open in New Delhi.

The Malaysians, seeded fourth, easily ousted India’s world No. 62 pair D. Pooja-S. Sanjana 21-11, 21-15 in 30 minutes yesterday.

The win was certainly uplifting for the duo after early second round exits in three of the four tournaments they have played this year.

Vivian-Cheng Wen had earlier trampled over Americans Emily Kan-lsabel Zhong 21-6, 21-8 in 19 minutes in the first round.

“Yes, getting into the quarter-final is a good boost for our confidence so we hope we can continue and keep playing well after this,” said Cheng Wen.

“And we feel really good so far. Maybe our opponents so far haven’t found their form when playing against us this time.”

“We have played them before so we know what they can do, but of course we prepared well for the matches.”

Vivian-Cheng Wen will have a handful when they take on Indonesian scratch pair of Della Destiara Haris-Tania Oktaviani Kusumah next.

Della is currently world No. 14 with Rizki Amelia Pradipta but they split up with Della partnering the 19-year-old Tania at the Indian Open.

And the pair showed their quality when they outlasted a determined China duo of Liu XuanxuanXia Yuting in a 21-15, 18-21, 21-16 victory in the second round.

Earlier, Della and Tania downed Rizki and new partner Ni Ketut Mahadewi Istarani 21-16, 21-18 in the first round.

“They (Della-Tania) will be a tough pair to beat and it could go either way but we are prepared to face them and we hope to come out with a win,” said Cheng Wen.

Vivian-Cheng Wen were not the only Malaysian pair to reach the last eight as Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean ousted China’s Chen Lu-Xu Ya 21-18, 21-10 to reach the same stage.

Mei Kuan-Meng Yean, the third seeds, will take on Chayanit Chaladchalam-Phataimas Muenwong for a place in the semi-finals.
