Report: IRB seeking RM1.5bil in additional taxes from Najib

JAYA: The Inland Revenue Board (IRB) is said to have asked former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to pay an additional RM1.5bil in taxes.

Quoting sources, The Edge Financial Daily said the IRB had sent a letter to Najib over a week ago, seeking the tax payment for the 2011-2017 period.

It said the amount was on top of what Najib had paid over the sevenyear period, based on his declared income.

According to the report, the IRB, based on its investigations, found that Najib had not declared a taxable income of almost RM4bil during that period.

The amount, it said, included the RM2.6bil that allegedly originated from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

When contacted, an IRB officer declined to confirm the report.

In July 2015, the Wall Street Journal reported that RM2.6bil of funds originating from 1MDB had flowed into Najib’s personal bank accounts.

Later that year, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission discovered that another RM42mil had been transferred from SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former subsidiary of 1MDB, into Najib’s personal bank accounts.

Najib has denied any wrongdoing.

After winning the general election last year, Pakatan Harapan launched fresh investigations into the case, forming a 1MDB special task force.

More than 400 bank accounts of individuals, political parties and NGOs involving a total of RM1.1bil were frozen during the investigation.
