KULIM: A single mother’s passion for extreme sports has earned her the moniker “superwoman” among locals.

When not working in a factory, Fauziah Abdullah, who is almost 42, of Kampung Sungai Buluh, Sedim, earns extra income by being an extreme sports guide.

These activities include mountain climbing, kayaking and cave exploration throughout the country.

“Every day I spend time doing exercises such as jogging to maintain my stamina and keep myself fit for the next booking, especially during weekends and school holidays,” she said at Sungai Sedim, where she does her kayak training.

The mother of three earns between RM1,000 and RM1,200 a month by being a guide.

“The rate depends on location, duration and the situation because at times, I have to be away for several days. I also have to be prepared for potential risks,” she added.

“Luckily, in my more than 10 years’ experience in extreme sports, I have managed to tackle all sorts of situations with the help of my colleagues,” said Fauziah.

She added that her biggest challenge was leading amateur teams as they were inexperienced.

Fauziah is prepared for emergencies and carries a first-aid kit.

She is trained to help those who may occasionally faint and experience muscle pull.

Fauziah has also built good rapport with the Fire and Rescue Department, police and Civil Defence Force.

“I also volunteer in search and rescue missions to look for missing persons and assist in drowning cases, and quite frequently I have to attend to participants getting injured or suffering from breathlessness.

“I have also taken classes in first aid, which is a requirement as a member of the Sedim Guide group,” she added.
