PETALING JAYA: To avoid wasting resources, precious time and stress due to having to switch courses midway, students should keep this weekend free and head to the Star Education Fair 2019 at the Sunway Convention Centre.

The fair is a one-stop centre for school-leavers who have just received their SPM and STPM results to seek professional advice from qualified counsellors and education experts on the most suitable programmes and pathways.

There will be useful tips and insights at the education and career talks conducted throughout the two-day fair.

The talks kick off on Saturday with a session on “Options after SPM” by Methodist College Kuala Lumpur assistant marketing manager Ng Jiehan from noon to 12.30pm.

Other talks on Saturday include “Digital Marketing for Millennials”, “In Search of Business Education: What Students Should Expect From Their Tertiary Experience”, “Your Future in Accounting & Finance”, and more.

A session on “Future Career: Data Profession” by Heriot-Watt University School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences Assistant Professor and lecturer Karamjeet Singh will also be held from 4.45pm to 5.15pm.

Karamjeet will talk on the skills needed to thrive in the field and how to decide on a good data science programme, as well as explain how data science is utilised in the technological world.

“Tech giants like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Alibaba as well as finance companies in the banking industry leverage on data to make better decisions.

“The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation envisions that Malaysia needs to have at least 20,000 data professionals and 2,000 data scientists,” he said, noting that the Harvard Business Review had labelled data scientists “the sexiest job of the 21st century”.

Students can also look up attractive scholarships and bursaries that are readily available at the event.

Quest International University Perak, which is the largest exhibitor at the event with 16 booths, will be offering merit-based scholarships while Management and Science University (MSU) has prepared scholarships, registration fee waivers and more.

MSU strategic and communications department executive Hazli Halaluddin said qualified students could get a fee waiver for two semesters and besides the MSU President scholarships, sports scholarships were also available.

Manipal Education Malaysia head of sales recruitment Nagen Paramasvaran said it was giving out 100% bursaries for students who enrolled in its foundation in science, engineering and business programmes as well as free hostel accommodation for one year.

City University Malaysia business development manager Nik Ahmad Fitri Nik Azman said it was offering full scholarships for foundation and A-Level students.

SEGi University and Colleges marketing executive Blake Tay Yu Xiang said it was offering early bird rebates, High Achiever Scholarship, Foundation Scholarship Scheme, Completion Award Scholarship and flight ticket subsidy for students from Sabah and Sarawak.

A “Career Test & Guidance”, managed by SEGi, is also available on both days to help determine suitable pathways.

Experienced counsellors will be present to guide students on their test results.
