GEORGE TOWN: A four-piece family band from Penang has been turning heads in China after they were invited to appear in several variety shows in the country.

Formed in 2015, the KOZYY family rock band from Bukit Jambul recently appeared on the Our Chinese Heart show, which featured various artistes from around the world.

They performed three numbers – Flower Drum, Come Up To Me which is adapted from a Chinese folk song Raise Your Red Veils and Rong Hua – during the show broadcasted by the Chinese free-to-air television channel CCTV4 last Sunday.

The lead singer of the band is 10-year-old Zheng Yao.

Also in the group are her father Ong Tai Suan, 46 (guitar); brother Zhen Ke, 13 (drums) and sister Zheng Yang, 16 (bass).

Ong said the family was proud to be invited to take part in the show which was recorded last November.

“We will always remember the applause and the smiling faces of the audience after our performance.

“It’s the best gift to us,” he said in an interview yesterday.

Ong said his 45-year-old wife Yeong Choo Yin works behind the scenes as their manager.

“Sometimes we perform at old folks homes and charity events,” he said, adding that the name KOZYY is derived from their surname and each members’ names.

Ong said in 2016, the family was recognised by The Malaysia Book of Records as the “First Family Performance Band”.

KOZYY is no stranger to Chinese viewers as they had also been invited by the Jilin Television Station in China to appear in the Happy Family 2018 TV Show and were also on the My Baby 2018 TV Show on the invitation of the Shandong Radio and TV Station.

The band has also performed at the annual “Spring Scream Music Festival 2018” in Taiwan.

At an interview during one of their shows, Zheng Yao had said that the songs they performed were taught to them by their 79-year-old grandmother, who is a retired teacher.

“Our grandmother reminded us not to forget our roots and to always remember our culture,” she said, adding that the family hoped to perform at the Chinese New Year Spring Festival Gala in China next year.

Zheng Yao was the youngest Malaysian to be selected for the China Sing! Kids 2017 show when she was just seven.

She also won the best singer award at the International Kids Talent Search in 2018 here in Malaysia.
