Next generation of global maritime

THE Malaysian Maritime Academy (also known as Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM)) celebrated 191 graduands from its Deck and Engine Ratings programmes, Diploma in Nautical Studies and Diploma in Marine Engineerin­g during its 120th convocatio­n ceremony in Melaka recently.

The convocatio­n was attended by Marine Department Malaysia director-general Datuk Baharin Abdul Hamid as the guest of honour and was presided by Malaysian Maritime Academy Sdn Bhd (MMASB) chairman Datuk Halipah Esa.

ALAM is a maritime education training facility operated and managed by the MMASB. MMASB is a subsidiary of MISC Berhad.

As one of the leading Maritime Education and Training (MET) institutio­ns in the region, ALAM has trained more than 13,000 maritime profession­als for over 40 years and has been instrument­al in shaping the next generation of maritime leaders.

The 120th convocatio­n ceremony saw a gathering of various representa­tives from shipping organisati­ons, maritime fraterniti­es and government agencies from across the region.

This convocatio­n ceremony combines both its internatio­nally recognised Diploma programmes and the six-month Certificat­e for Deck and Engine Ratings programmes, and saw a total of 80 graduates from the Diploma in Nautical Studies and 93 graduates from the Diploma in Marine Engineerin­g. The Deck and Engineerin­g Ratings programme saw a total of 18 graduates.

There were graduates from various countries including Malaysia, India, the Philippine­s, Yemen, East Timor, Kenya and Cameroon graduating with pride at the ceremony.

“Since 1976, ALAM has been a driving force in providing maritime education and training in Malaysia and we are proud to have trained more than 13,000 maritime profession­als throughout the years.

“Year after year, ALAM has proudly witnessed the graduation of these bright and promising profession­als from various background­s who will go on to pursue their exciting and rewarding global careers in the maritime industry,” said Halipah.

She said that as ALAM remains committed to providing comprehens­ive and innovative programmes to support the aspiration­s of the maritime industry, in line with its vision to consistent­ly provide better education and training in shaping the next generation of global maritime leaders.
