Equipped with the knowledge on athletics
TEACHERS had a field day learning the Athletics Technical and Rules Course at St Paul’s Institution Secondary School (SPI) in Seremban recently.
The aim of the course, organised by the Seremban District Education Office, was to equip teachers with the knowledge on identifying errors and judging school athletes who compete in runs, jumps and throws in the District Schools Sports Council (MSSD) Seremban One Championships in Paroi Stadium and Tunku Kurshiah College.
The course was conducted by experienced instructors R Sathiyakumar, G Manimaran, G M K Kalaichelvan and MAA Anthonysamy.
Among the areas covered in the course were judging, umpiring, timekeeping, throws and jumps as well as the technical and rules of each event.
Thishwin Rames, 13, who is a new member of the SPI Athletics Club said he was excited to give a demonstration of the long jump for the athletics teachers.
One of the instructors, Sathiyakumar said: “It is encouraging to see a good turnout from the teachers from most of the primary and secondary schools in our district.”
“I decided to have one of my students demonstrate live because this method is more effective and hands-on compared to projector slides and diagrams drawn on the board in lectures in the classroom,” he added.
He hoped the teachers would train the teachers and pupils in their respective schools who are taking part in the athletics meets during their annual school Sports Day soon. T Loganathan of SMK Datuk Shahardin in Labu said he learned in detail the measurement for jumps and throws.
“When I go back to school, I plan to identify potential students who can excel in these field events,” he said.
Fadzilah Abdul Wahab of SJKC Kuo Min said he was able to pick up the necessary skills to officiate in the high jump, long jump, discus throw, javelin throw and shot put as he closely watched those in action.
“Now I am armed with the basic knowledge and can become an official in both track and field events at my school’s sports day,” he added.
