Melaka exco member visits elderly woman

MELAKA: A state leader here has started his first day of Ramadan by visiting a frail 94-year-old woman.

“Ramadan is a spiritual affair. Getting blessings from an elderly person is something special to me,” said State Agriculture, Entrepreneur Development, Co-operative and Agro-based Industries Committee chairman Norhizam Hassan Baktee of his visit to the home of Lee Ah Choo.

“I was brought up to respect all human beings,” he said after visiting Lee yesterday and handling cash aid and biscuits to her.

Norhizam said he would continue visiting orphans and other needy people during Ramadan.

“I can do more this year as I have several organisations to chip in some funds so that more people in the state can receive aid,” he said.

“In previous years, I used my personal savings to do charity during Ramadan.”

Norhizam said he decided to visit Lee after hearing that she needed assistance for medical expenses.

The Pengkalan Batu assemblyman also spoke of his earlier years in the 1970s when his parents used to have meals with nonMuslims during breaking of fast events.

“No one made an issue out of religion back then. Many of us were poor. Putting food on the table was the main concern,” he said.

Norhizam said he was upset with some political developments that saw some parties condemning other races.

“These people are only spreading hate but Islam is all about being compassionate and humble,” he said.

Lee, who is unable to walk, was pleased to meet Norhizam.

“Thank you for visiting me. I am very happy today,” she said.
