Only Khairul left to carry men’s challenge in Archery World Cup

PETALING JAYA: Two-time Olympian Khairul Anuar Mohamed (pic) is the only surviving Malaysian in the men’s recurve individual competitio­n at the Archery World Cup leg in Shanghai, China.

Khairul was spot-on as he fired himself into sixth spot at the end of the rankings round with 676 points.

It earned him a bye in the first two rounds held yesterday.

Also joining Khairul to advance into the round of 32 are Nur Aliya Ghapar and Nur Afisa Abdul Halil in the women’s recurve individual competitio­n.

Nur Afisa, who shot for 34th place in the ranking rounds with 623 points, had a bye in the first round before she overcame Spain’s Alicia Marin 7-3 in the second round.

Nur Aliya, who shot 617 points for 45th place in the ranking rounds, cruised through the first round with a 6-0 win over Thailand’s Nattapat Inkham.

Nur Aliya then reached the third round after she beat the higher seeded Elia Canales of Spain in a one-arrow shoot-off after the scores were tied at 5-5.

In the compound event, only Syahrizan Jafar made it through into the third round when he took out Hong Kong’s Cheung Cheuk Sing 143-138 in the second round of the men’s individual competitio­n. He received a bye in the first round.

In the women’s individual competitio­n, Nur Aina Yasmine Halim and Nurul Syazhera Mohd Asmi made their way into the second round.

Nur Aina defeated Singapore’s Christina Gunawan 141-137 while Nurul Syazhera narrowly defeated Inge Van Caspel of Holland 143-142.
