IGP: Jho Low will be safe
He and his family will not be harmed if he returns, says top cop
KUALA LUMPUR: The Inspector-General of Police has promised that fugitive Low Taek Jho, or better known as Jho Low, and his family will not be harmed if he returns to Malaysia.
Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador said despite the ongoing investigations into the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal, his main focus was to bring Jho Low and his six right-hand men out of hiding.
“There is no way and nowhere they can hide. The sooner justice is delivered, the better for them.
“If they think they are innocent, prove it in the Malaysian courts. I can assure them that the police will not harm them,” he told reporters after launching the Ops Selamat campaign in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri yesterday.
He said the men could return and engage the best lawyers to defend them.
“Don’t waste our time. They cannot run forever.
“We want to close this sad episode as soon as possible,” he said, adding that the country needed to move on.
Abdul Hamid said the police would ensure the safety of Jho Low and his family.
“There are stories floating around that he will be tortured and killed if he comes back and that is just baseless. We have laws here.
“Don’t hide behind your lawyers and make rebuttals by denying this and that,” he said, adding that a bounty was offered a few months ago but there were no takers.
However, the police were quietly working on something on their end, he said.
Asked if Jho Low was hiding in Indonesia, Abdul Hamid said only his second wife was there.
“He was there once,” he said, declining to reveal Jho Low’s current location except to say that he is in South-East Asia.
“Remember, I came forward to the media in 2015 and revealed that there were efforts to hide him somewhere and allow him to migrate to a certain country,” he said.
Abdul Hamid said they were fortunate that they had foreign law enforcers, embassies and other agencies assisting them.
