Huawei’s Mate 30 flagship has unrivalled photo capture and video recording features
MUNICH: Cameras, 5G and an improved design and user experience – these were just some of the factors Huawei emphasised at the launch of its latest flagship Mate 30 series.
“The Mate 30 Series unleashes the full potential of the smartphone. Designed to stand out, it challenges convention while delivering an unrivalled user experience,” said Huawei consumer business group CEO Richard Yu.
Boasting a rear triple-camera setup, the Mate 30 has a 40-megapixel SuperSensing camera, a 16-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera, as well as laser focus.
The highlight is the Mate 30 Pro which boasts a quad-camera set-up – a 40-megapixel Cine camera, a 40-megapixel SuperSensing camera, an 8-megapixel telephoto camera and a 3D Depth Sensing camera.
The Cine camera on the Mate 30 Pro is capable of recording 4K videos at 60fps (frames per second) with pro-Bokeh effects, and capturing low-light time-lapse clips.
Users can also dabble in highspeed photography and record fast-moving scenes such as a balloon bursting, as the camera supports ultra slow-motion video capture at up to 7,680fps.
Huawei has eliminated physical volume buttons on the Mate 30 Pro, replacing them with “invisible” virtual keys that can be positioned on either side of the device – handy for both left- and right-handed users.
The Mate 30 Pro features AI smart gesture control for contactless interaction – users can swipe to scroll and “grab” to take screenshots.
There is also an AI auto-rotate function that flips the screen based on the user’s eye movements, and AI Private View, which hides a notification when someone else tries to peek at the display.
The Mate 30 has a 6.62-inch flat screen with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels and the Mate 30 Pro has a 6.53-inch curved edge-to-edge screen with 2,400 x 1,176-pixel resolution.
Local prices and availability have yet to be announced.
In Europe, the Mate 30 with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage will retail
799 for (RM3,700). The Mate 30 Pro with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage
1,099 will go for (RM5,100) for the
1,199 non-5G version and (RM5,550) for the 5G model.
Both phones will be available in Emerald Green, Space Silver, Cosmic Purple and Black, while the Forest Green and Orange versions will be available in vegan leather.
Huawei also announced a 5G version of the Mate 30 Pro and the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 30 RS, which is a variant of the Mate 30 Pro with 5G.
It has 12GB RAM and 512GB storage and will be available in red or black with leather finishing on the
2,095 back for (RM9,700).
Huawei also pulled back the curtains on the Watch GT 2 smartwatch.
Powered by the Kirin A1 chip, the Watch GT 2 boasts a battery life of 14 days per charge. It will also feature 15 workout modes, an enhanced music player, and allows users to take calls from up to 150m away from their phone.
