Local folk take approachable Wee to heart

-

PONTIAN: An upbeat and cordial atmosphere filled the air at Kedai Kopi Sua Huan as patrons, who were enjoying their morning cuppa, light up at the sight of Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng.

The Barisan Nasional candidate was quick to warm up to the local folk there, some of whom have known him for decades.

The meet-and-greet session at the coffee shop, followed by a walkabout at the adjacent Kukup ferry terminal and shops, were part of his campaigning to woo voters in Tanjung Piai.

Despite having lost in the 14th General Election, Wee did not abandon his voters, instead making it a point to return and meet them, listen to their problems and offer help.

Agreeing that the former MP has been a people’s leader through and through, roti canai seller Muhamad Fahmi Maula A. Kadir, 27, said he used to see Wee very often while helping out at his father’s stall since 12.

“He has been very approachable throughout the years, even after he lost in GE14,” he said.

Muhamad Fahmi, from Penerok, said the voters in Tanjung Piai would prefer a leader who put the people’s welfare first.

When met by reporters, Wee said he was grateful for the people’s support throughout the years as an MP and assemblyman.

“It warms my heart to meet with the locals, especially those who openly expressed their support.

“I am thankful to them for giving me the spirit and strength to fight on,” he said.

Citing the issue involving 100 tonnes of dead fish in Pulau Kukup, he said a people’s representative was important to highlight such concerns to the government.

Wee also said that he would work hard to get every possible vote and not be affected by any allegation or slander.

“Being in the Opposition today, I welcome support from any parties.

“This is not an easy battle as every vote counts,” he said.
