PONTIAN: Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal has downplayed reports of discontent among DAP grassroots members on campaigning for the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia candidate.

“From last night until now, I’m still campaigning with teams from DAP. So far, our relations with DAP is very cordial.

“It seems that we can cooperate and most importantly, we must focus and win. Tanjung Piai belongs to us,” he told reporters after a dialogue session with the fishermen community in Kukup yesterday.

Dr Sahruddin did not deny there was discontent but pointed to the presence of key DAP leaders such as Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng in Tanjung Piai as a sign of the relationship looking good.

“Up till this second, in my opinion, the relationship looks good. Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng are here,” he said.

Dr Sahruddin’s remarks came following Guan Eng’s admission that there had been discontent among DAP grassroots members about campaigning for Bersatu candidate Karmaine Sardini.

The DAP secretary-general, who spoke during a press conference at the Selangor DAP Convention yesterday, said that despite the unhappiness all Pakatan component parties had to work together in the by-election.

Dr Sahruddin also declined to comment on reports that free SIM cards were distributed to those who attended a Pakatan ceramah in Tenggayun on Friday night.

“Up till now, I was not informed about the SIM card issue so I don’t want to comment,” he said.

Asked if this meant a denial, Dr Sahruddin said: “I wasn’t informed about it so how can I deny it?”

On Saturday, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong took Pakatan to task over allegations that free SIM cards had been given as “rewards” to the public.
