Weng Son collects fourth silver in four Games outings

-

FRUSTRATION was written all over Wong Weng Son’s face as he failed to end his chase for the elusive gold medal in his fourth Games.

The 27-year-old had to settle for another silver in the changquan (long fists) event on the opening day of the wushu competition at the World Trade Centre yesterday.

It was his fourth silver medal in the Games.

Weng Son made his debut in Myanmar in 2013 with a silver in the duel and secured two silvers in jianshu (sword) and qiangshu (spear) when Malaysia hosted the Games two years ago.

Yesterday, Weng Son was awarded 9.680 for his performance and he was ahead until Singapore’s Yong Yi Xiang overtook the Malaysian with 9.700.

Tran Xuan Hiep of Vietnam took the bronze with 9.600 as the favourite and reigning world champion Edgar Xavier Marvelo of Indonesia, the last to perform, settled for fourth with 9.590.

Another Malaysian Yeap Wai Kin was fifth with 9.540.

Weng Son put up a brave front despite the disappointment.

“This is my first medal in changquan as I always had no chance to enter this event,” said Weng Son.

“At the KL Games I was asked to focus on jianshu and qiangshu as part of the team strategy to make sure we can win.

“So I am not disappointed with a silver. I was confident of getting a medal as I focused more on changquan this time as there is no jianshu and qiangshu events here,” said Weng Son, who came here with the reputation as the silver medallist at the World Wushu Championships in Shanghai in October.

Weng Son still has one more shot at the gold as he will partner Wai Kin for the duel tomorrow.
