Snatch thief dies after victim rams him by accident

-

SERDANG: A suspected snatch thief died after his victim accidentally ran into him when giving chase in his car.

The thief had ridden against the traffic flow in his haste to escape after snatching a gold chain from a 44-year-old man in Bandar Puteri, Puchong.

The man went after him but could not stop his car in time, ramming into the thief, when he stopped his motorcycle in the middle of the road.

Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Ismadi Borhan said the incident happened at 6.24pm on Sunday.

He said the man got out his car and quickly called an ambulance to send the suspect to the hospital.

“The suspect was given treatment at the Serdang Hospital. However, he died from severe injuries,” he said yesterday.

ACP Ismadi said initial investigations showed the suspect had grabbed the man’s necklace when he was just about to enter his car, triggering the high speed chase.

He said the stolen gold necklace has been recovered.

“Checks also showed the suspect has a record for drug-related offences and robberies,” he said.

ACP Ismadi said police would investigate the case under Section 392 of the Penal Code for committing robbery and Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.

He urged those with information to contact the nearest police station.
