Police have remanded a 35-year-old man from Lukut in Port Dickson who was apparently caught on video mercilessly hitting a chained dog in a house.

Port Dickson OCPD Supt Aidi Sham Mohamed said the suspect was detained at his house in Lukut at about 10pm on Sunday.

“We have obtained a two-day remand from the Magistrate’s Court in PD to probe the alleged incident.

“This came after a 23-year-old man who was the owner of the dog lodged a report on Saturday claiming that a group of men had caused a ruckus and hit the dog at his house,” he added.

Supt Aidi Sham said police also seized a broken piece of wood from the suspect that was allegedly used to hit the animal.

He also said that a preliminary police probe showed that the man did not have a criminal record.

The case is being investigated under Section 428 of the Penal Code for killing or maiming an animal.

Offenders can be jailed up to three years or fined, or both.

State women, family and welfare committee chairman Nicole Tan urged the police to investigate the matter after a video clip of a man beating a dog with a piece of wood went viral on Sunday.

The incident is said to have taken place in a low-cost housing scheme on Saturday evening.

Tan said the dog did not deserve to be beaten.

“The dog may have barked at the suspect as she may have been protecting her owner’s house or her pups. How could this have offended the suspect?” she asked.

Furrykids Safehaven, a shelter for strays here, in a Facebook posting said two dogs were attacked in the incident. It claimed that the suspect began hitting the dogs even before the incident was recorded.

The female dog suffered injuries to its face and eyes while a male dog also sustained injuries near its ear.
