Pushing riders to greater heights through mobile apps

- By K. RAJAN

When we talk about technology in cycling the focus will be on the bicycle.

However, times have changed and now a new technology is being used to push riders to produce optimum results.

South Africa based team NTT Pro Cycling are testament how technology and data can be used to get the best from athletes by using mobile applications.

The team started with a health and wellness app which was called Phila in 2017 before branching out to other apps to help manage the riders better.

Phila prompts the riders to complete an assessment via their mobile devices.

The information gathered is correlated with existing training data captured by the team’s TrainingPeaks application and is used to monitor performance alongside overall their health and wellness.

NTT Pro Cycling head of marketing Damian Murphy revealed that the apps have revolutionised the team in a short time.

He revealed that there were resistance initially from the riders but once they understood the objectives it was all hands on deck.

“It all started with Phila, which enabled us to monitor the athletes’ well-being.

“With the app, we know for example how much sleep they were getting. We also have another app to check their weight before and after training.

“This enabled us to monitor how much fluid the riders are losing and we can formulate their recovery better.”
