Evening edition of Sin Chew stops print but stays online

PETALING JAYA: The evening edition of Sin Chew Daily saw its last edition on Monday, after a run of nearly 30 years.

While readers will no longer get the print edition, the newspaper will carry on publishing online through the ePaper as usual.

Leading vernacular newspapers such as Sin Chew and China Press offer two editions of the print edition of its newspaper – the evening and morning editions.

The evening edition typically hits the streets slightly after 6.30pm.

In recent years, distribution of the evening edition had decreased, with only outlets within or close to the Klang Valley getting it.

In a news article, Sin Chew said it would continue to provide the latest news updates every evening on its ePaper, which is downloadable from 6pm onwards – half an hour earlier than the usual time.

It said the evening edition was launched in the 1990s to deliver fast and accurate news to readers.

“Due to various challenges, the evening edition will stop printing,” it said.

An editor, who wished to remain anonymous, said the print version used to be available in the market at around 7pm.

“Those in the Petaling area could get it earlier at about 6.30pm.

“With its cessation, readers can opt for the ePaper version even earlier now,” he said.

When contacted, a China Press executive editor confirmed that the company had temporarily halted the print version of its evening edition during the movement control order (MCO) period.

However, she said the electronic version of the evening edition was still available.

“The print version will be back once the MCO is over,” she added.

Considering the various restrictions imposed during the MCO, both media houses have called on their readers who face difficulties in getting their newspapers to get it from nearby retail stores.
