RM700,000 in drugs seized

One suspect held as penang cops smash drug syndicate

GEORGE TOWN: Penang police believe they have smashed a local drug syndicate with the arrest of a man and seizure of various drugs worth more than RM700,000.

The 26-year-old man was detained during an operation by the state Narcotics Criminal Investigat­ion Department between 6.30pm on April 12 and 10am on April 13, said Penang police chief Comm Datuk Sahabudin Abd Manan.

“The suspect, who is unemployed, was caught at the roadside near Queensbay area and after investigat­ion by police, the suspect led police to an apartment nearby where he used as a storage place for the drugs.

“Police then raided the apartment and found 1.5kg of heroin base, 32.6kg of heroin, 6.6kg of syabu, 41.7g of ganja, 25kg of caffeine and 3,300 Erimin 5 pills,” he said at the state police headquarte­rs here yesterday.

The drugs seized during the operation is worth RM717,896 and could be used by 154,318 drug addicts, said Comm Sahabudin.

He added that police also confiscate­d a car and a motorcycle worth RM37,700.

The syndicate was believed to have been distributi­ng drugs to the local market and that it had just started operations three weeks ago.

Comm Sahabudin said police were tracking down the other members of the syndicate.

The man has been remanded for seven days until April 19.
