TWO families in Serdang Jaya, Selangor, have lost their homes and nearly all their possessions in a fire recently, reported Makkal Osai.

One of the victims, R. Backiam, said both floors of her house were completely destroyed. Her neighbour, A. Valliamma’s family, also suffered similar damage to the upper floor of their house but luckily, both families escaped without injuries.

Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo’s representative S. Robert said the families had been placed temporarily in a community hall in the area.

They were also given some financial assistance and basic necessities, said Sri Serdang state assemblywoman Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud’s representative Lee Sam.

> A young man in India travelled 1,700km by bicycle to return to his hometown in Odisha after getting stuck at his workplace due to the ongoing curfew, Makkal Osai also reported.

Mahesh Jinna, 20, works at a factory in Sangli-Miraj, Maharashtra, for a monthly salary of 15,000 rupees (RM850).

The factory had to shut down for the curfew, which began on March 24 and was extended to May 3.

It was also rumoured that the factory might not return to operations for up to three months due to a low demand.

After waiting for a week, he wanted to return to his hometown as his savings could not last him the entire duration of the curfew and beyond.

It took him seven days to return to his village where he was stopped at the border and promptly placed in quarantine.
