TAR UC students are CIMA top scorers
SEVEN Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) Bachelor of Accounting final year students scored top marks in the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Strategic Case Study (SCS) November 2019 paper, ahead of their graduation.
High-achievers Yeoh Hao Jing, Lee Soo Yee, Lau Sang San, Ping Meng Wai, Kam Keen Onn, Wong Siew Nam and Chow Hui Yee took part in CIMA’s A-Star Programme, which serves as a pathway for them to become Chartered Global Management Accountants (CGMA).
They are eligible to apply for the CIMA membership and become CGMA designation holders after gaining three years of work experience paired with the SCS paper.
The students credited TAR UC for providing the solid foundation that propelled them to do well in the SCS paper.
Keen Onn said TAR UC’s lecturers and tutors helped her build a strong foundation in accountancy which motivated her to take the CIMA paper.
“TAR UC’s library also provided many helpful materials which was useful for me in preparing for the exam,” she said.
Agreeing with Keen Onn, Soo Yee said she learnt two out of three of the strategic level subjects, namely, risk management and financial strategy, from her Accounting course in TAR UC, while Hao Jing said she was thankful for the conducive environment and good facilities the institution provides for students.
The students also shared how they overcame challenges they faced.
Hui Yee, who initially lacked knowledge on SCS topics, advised those thinking of sitting for the exam to go through past year papers extensively to boost their understanding and familiarise themselves with the format.
Keen Onn said preparing early and improving critical thinking skills can help an exam candidate to figure out answers from different perspectives, while Soo Yee said giving up should not be an option.
TAR UC has a long and well-established relationship with CIMA which dates back to 1971, when it first provided education that prepared students for the Institute of
Cost and Management Accountants (ICMA) professional qualification. In 1986, ICMA changed its name to CIMA.
TAR UC’s outstanding academic achievements and exceptional support for students taking CIMA papers have earned it the CIMA Global Learning Premium Partner status.
Graduates from TAR UC’s Diploma in Accounting programme are exempted from the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting, and graduates from the Bachelor of Accounting programme, the Bachelor of Business in Accounting and Finance programme, and the Master of Business Administration programme, are exempted from 11 of the 16 papers of CIMA.
Final year students from the Bachelor of Accounting programme are also given the opportunity to attempt the CIMA Management Case Study and Strategic level papers under special arrangements with CIMA.
