The harrowing days of living under a flyover in Nibong Tebal finally came to an end for 69-year-old Lee Kuang Hai.

Thanks to a non-governmental organisation, Lee is now staying at Leisure Healthcare Home in Sungai Lembu, which is surrounded by a garden and a view of the Mengkuang Dam and the Cherok To’kun Hill.

Lee, who spent eight years living below the Jalan Temoh flyover, thanked One Hope Charity & Welfare for helping him find a proper home.

“I used to work as a contractor doing home renovation and lived with my brother.

“After he passed away, I retired from my job and became homeless.

“I found a shelter under the bridge, and I survived by collecting scraps and also relied on donation and food from the public.

“It was cold and wet during the night, but my worst nightmare was when thugs would turn up and attack me in the middle of the night.

“I couldn’t run due to my poor health. After taking all my money, they would use sticks to bash me up.

“Sometimes, I would sleep with a bloodied body,” he said yesterday.

Lee, who is single, said he was attacked several times.

On June 18, volunteers from One Hope Charity & Welfare responded to his plight.

“When we arrived there, his belongings were there but he was not around.

“Later, we found out that he had been hospitalised for a month with over 10 stitches on his head. He was also partially blind in his right eye.

“The necessary arrangements were then made for him to stay at this home. When we told him about the news, you could see him beaming with joy,” said One Hope’s chairman Chua Sui Hau.

The organisation will also pay for Lee to stay at the home for the rest of his life.

“Thank you, thank you. I’m so happy with all my friends here,” said Lee as he gestured with two thumbs up.
