MoUs to benefit students
SEGI College Kuala Lumpur and the Centre for Biomedical and Technology Integration (CBMTI) has formalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a SEGi IR4.0 Development Hub within the college premises.
This partnership will enable CBMTI, a smart start-up established by Universiti Malaya (UM), to consult, train and assist SEGi in setting up the hub to promote nation-building efforts, particularly in creating and developing technology-driven new enterprises and a new generation of highly-skilled talents.
SEGi Group of Colleges chief executive officer (CEO) Stella Lau said the hub will function as a Technology Business Incubator to develop new IR4.0 skills to grow the nation’s talent pool and promote a sustainable tech economy.
“We will have certification programmes, project management opportunities, skills and technical training and development as well as employment opportunities for all including students, professionals and the unemployed.
“With more people migrating to digital infrastructures, there is going to be a greater need for skilled professionals to ideate, develop, execute and implement innovative solutions to meet the market’s needs.
“More importantly, the entire value chain will be impacted by this change so everyone gets a slice of the pie,” said Lau.
SEGi School of Engineering and Technology head David Foo Sek Kuan said: “Aside from professional certifications, apprenticeship and employment opportunities, the hub can also facilitate research and development (R&D), entrepreneurial training, innovation design, technology transfer and commercialisation efforts.”
A collaboration between an award-winning and well-recognised start-up like CBMTI and an established institution like SEGi has major advantages as both parties can complement the R&D and human capital training initiatives.
“Aside from fulfilling the nation’s need for skilled human capital, such collaborations also equip current student population with relevant knowledge and skills to prepare them for tomorrow’s job market through industry collaborations and engagements, mentoring and coaching,” Foo added.
SEGi College Kuala Lumpur is the first tertiary institution to collaborate with CBMTI.
Through this collaboration, SEGi and CBMTI can also create awareness and facilitate the development of self-employment and entrepreneurship as IR4.0 paves the way for new job and wealth creations.
The MoU was signed by Lau and CBMTI director Prof Datuk Dr Zainal Ariff Abdul Rahman.
Additionally, SEGi Group of Colleges had also signed a MoU with UM for a course and research collaboration for their engineering programmes.
The tie-up offers an articulation pathway for SEGi-Sunderland Engineering undergraduates to obtain degrees from the University of
Sunderland (UoS), United Kingdom, and complete their Master’s programme at UM, all within four years of study.
The MoU enables the group and UM to share resources and engage in staff and student exchange.
They can also share publications, reports, academic materials and information resources while leveraging their professional networks to widen employment reach and opportunities for their engineering graduates.
SEGi Education Group executive director Dr Lisa Tan said: “We hope to see both institutions conducting and engaging in joint research activities that are focused on IR4.0 to contribute to the engineering sector.”
SEGi College Subang Jaya Faculty of Engineering and IT head Dr Tiu Zian Cheak said under this agreement, SEGi-Sunderland’s Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Electronic Engineering students can enrol into UM’s Master of Mechanical Engineering and Master of Industrial Electronics and Control Engineering, respectively.
“SEGi students will benefit tremendously as they will have the opportunity to attend lectures conducted by UM’s academic staff and have their final year projects be co-supervised by SEGi and UM lecturers,” he added.
This MoU was headed by Tan and UM Faculty of Engineering dean Prof Dr Saad Mekhilef.
