Give children wings to fly

- AZIZI AHMAD Senior educator Kuala Lumpur

PARENTING is a lifelong investment as it’s not easy to raise good, emphatic and empowered children.

Parents must be steadfast in nurturing their children throughout their lives.

However, there is no right or wrong way to raise a child which is why, more often than not, parents find something new about themselves in the process.

One of the many things we learn is leadership skills and to accept our children’s good and bad traits.

Parents tend to view things from an emotional standpoint and bask in the happiness we gain from the birth of our children, often forgetting the greater challenges we have to shoulder in our roles.

Our responsibility is to find the right tools to impart principles on our children.

As a leader, you should be able to anticipate the challenges that will arrive and be prepared for it. It is important for parents to cut the umbilical cord when the time is right.

Parents need to act as facilitators instead of being decision makers for their children as they grow up. You must trust them to make their own decisions, and let them explore, make mistakes and find their own way in life.

They must be exposed to different kinds of knowledge and skills at a young age, the same way organisations and leaders need each employee to develop in their own way.

We must understand the difference between ordering a task to be done and motivating them to do it.

Children often imitate the behaviour of their parents, where some could be unhealthy traits.

Therefore, parents must be careful when they are with their children as they need attention and a conflict-free environment to develop.
