Passers-by roared and cheered when some 20 superbikers took to the road to spread patriotism among Malaysians.
As they embarked on the “2020 Batu Uban Merdeka Ride”, the participants also distributed Jalur Gemilang to the public along their 3km journey.
Batu Uban assemblyman A. Kumaresan said the event, which saw riders taking off from Taman Pekaka, was aimed at spreading the Merdeka spirit among the community.
“We started from my service centre in Taman Pekaka, made a pit stop at the Bukit Jambul Complex and circled routes in the Batu Uban area before ending our journey at Raffel Park in Minden Heights.
“Throughout the ride, we distributed some 500 Jalur Gemilang along our journey,” he said at the Bukit Jambul Complex.
During the pit stop at the Bukit Jambul Complex, the group took a short break to sing the national anthem as well as the state anthem before continuing their journey.
Kumaresan said they adapted due to Covid-19 and rode their bikes to commemorate Merdeka this year.
“We wanted to celebrate Merdeka and we did think of ways to organise events like stage performances and celebrations, but these would cause crowding.
“With the Covid-19 situation right now, it is not ideal to hold any form of big events, so this is one of the best ways to do it under the circumstances.
“In previous years, we held a variety of events like hiking and plogging with the community during the Merdeka month.
“Unfortunately this year, activities are not feasible.
“By going on a journey like this, we minimise contact and crowding, but it still allows us to send a message of harmony and the spirit of these
Merdeka,” he added.
The event was organised by Kumaresan’s office and the Taman Brown Village Community Management Council in collaboration with the Tribals Rider Motor Club.
