Veteran artiste Supama facing hardship after losing job

VETERAN artiste Supama Perumal is facing difficulties after her employer allegedly laid her off in July without any notice or compensation, Berita Harian reported.

The 71-year-old, who has acted in over 1,500 radio dramas and 60 theatre shows, lost her job on July 9.

Supama had also lost contact with her only daughter, while her son died of a heart attack last year. Her husband S. Subramaniam died in 1999.

The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), through its Ziarah Kasih Finas Prihatin programme, recently organised a gotong-royong event at Supama’s dilapidated home.

Volunteers from Global Ikhwan Sdn Bhd Holdings, Majlis Perundingan Pertubuhan Islam Malaysia and Angkatan Pertahanan Awam also joined the event to help repair her leaking roof and clean her house.

Mohd Ridhuan Daud, 22, said he gave the dog a pat because it looked sad. He wore his gloves before touching the dog.

“I did not expect the dog to follow me to my workplace (in Pengerang, about 200m from a beach where it was found),” he said.

He uploaded a short video clip of the dog on his Twitter account.

“I am not seeking attention, but I want to deliver an important message behind the video: Be kind to strays,” he said, adding that his life felt incomplete if he did not feed stray animals.

The youngest of seven siblings said his late mother, Rosiah Karim, had taught him to love animals.

“Feeding animals has become my daily routine. I feel happy watching them eat,” he said.
