Three from Alam cluster test positive

Cases involved a sea vessel that had been to Japan

Three of the 10 latest infections recorded in Malaysia were linked to the Alam cluster.

The cluster, which was made known last Thursday, involved a sea vessel which had been to Japan.

The initial patients were given treatment at Hospital Bintulu in Sarawak.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the 27 people linked to the cluster screened so far, seven had tested positive, 18 found to be negative, while two others were awaiting their results.

In a statement yesterday, he said that two of the 10 new cases recorded as of yesterday afternoon were from the Tawar cluster.

The Tawar cluster was discovered on Aug 13. It started with nine members of a family in Tawar, Kedah, with the first case involving a trader who had attended a religious event to mark the death of a family member.

Contact tracing for the locally transmitte­d Tawar cluster is still ongoing.

He said that 3,286 people from Kedah, Penang and Perak had been screened so far.

The total number of Covid-19 cases from the Tawar cluster stands at 65 as of yesterday.

Of the 2,758 people screened in Kedah, 54 tested positive, with 342 still awaiting results.

In Penang, a total of 517 people linked to the Tawar cluster had been screened. Eleven of them were found to be positive.

All the 11 people connected to the cluster in Perak had tested negative.

As of yesterday, Dr Noor Hisham said that Malaysia recorded 9,267 Covid-19 cases.

Nine patients are being treated at the intensive care unit with four of them depending on ventilator support.

Ten people recovered yesterday, bringing the total number of such cases to 8,959 (96.7%). No death was reported yesterday.
