GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan will contest in 25 parliamentary seats nationwide in the case of any snap elections this year, says its president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau.

Lau said they were expecting snap elections to come up soon and had decided to focus on contesting in 25 areas under the parliament.

“As the areas we chose are important to us, we need to strategise our movements.

“The party is moving towards areas that we are going to contest in to appeal to people.

“We predict that snap elections will happen for sure for the parliament, but in the case of states, some are not following.

“We narrowed down the areas we wanted to contest in,” he said at a press conference while distributing the Jalur Gemilang to residents at Desa Pinang 1 in Jelutong here yesterday.

Lau added that the party would keep gauging the situation in the case of snap polls as the political situation in the country was in flux.

“We mapped out our action plans, and we will be on the ground with the people, especially at hotspots in the areas we want to contest to gauge and survey the public.

“Some of the elements we take seriously are the people’s reactions and acceptance towards the party, acceptance towards candidates put forth by Gerakan, the public’s perception and their feedback. These are all important as we need to gauge these elements to see if we can still put out a strong contest in the next election,” he added.

Penang Gerakan chairman Oh Tong Keong said the party started mobilising in the state towards areas they would hopefully contest in.

“We are organising more activities to interact with the community and to gauge their perception and wants within their areas.

“This, hopefully, can help us garner support from the people and for us to stand a chance to contest and win in the future,” he said.

After the press conference, Lau, Oh and other Gerakan members distributed some 40 Jalur Gemilang flags to be put up at the premises of Desa Pinang 1 and Pinang Court 1.
