Warda breakthrough! Amira emerges joint winner at Intercollegiate C’ship
PETALING JAYA: Warda Amira Abdul Rawof has finally secured a breakthrough in the United States collegiate golf scene when she emerged joint-winner at the Terrier Intercollegiate Championship.
The 20-year-old, on her 17th start for the East Tennessee State University (ETSU) since 2017, carded rounds of 72, 73 and 74 to be tied at the top with Pole Dorota Zalewska of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) on three-over 219 at the Country Club of Spartanburg in South California.
Warda’s performance also inspired ETSU to the team title when the five-member side came out tops with a 15-over 879 total, beating UTC by 12 shots.
Warda was extremely pleased to mark her first return to competition in more than seven months with a double triumph.
The ETSU final year student had also impressed in her last outing in
March before the season was halted by the Covid-19 outbreak, when she finished tied-seventh at the River Landing Classic in North Carolina.
“We are grateful to be able to compete during this difficult time and I’m happy to come home with two wins,” said Warda in the etsubucs. com, the official sports site of ETSU.
Warda will be aiming to make it a back-to-back win as she and teammates head to Georgia next for the Mercer Invitational, to be held at the Brickyard Golf Club from Nov 9-10.
Warda wasn’t the only Malaysian to have made a name for herself at ETSU as she joined alumni Loy Hee Ying as tournament winners for their institution.
Hee Ying enjoyed a successful collegiate career in the US, winning three titles and registering 23 top-10 finishes in 42 appearances in her four years donning the ETSU colours from 2016-2019.
