Harsher penalties will burden the poor, says Anwar
PETALING JAYA: Heavier penalties will further burden the poor should the government decide to raise the current RM1,000 fine for movement control order violations, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The opposition leader said he was not challenging the standard operating procedure (SOP) but consideration must be given to help the people.
“You should listen to the feedback from businesses and state governments to get a better picture,” he said in a Facebook live session with state Pakatan Harapan leaders on efforts by Pakatan-led states in combating Covid-19.
Those present were Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Anwar said the real effects of the Emergency proclamation has yet to be felt by the people.
The PKR president said there were other matters that must be considered by the government in terms of taking care of the needs of the people.
Anwar said the government had yet to provide a proper justification for the Emergency proclamation or answer questions on its plans for areas such as education and the economy.
“We are told to follow the SOP. We agreed, but those who don’t comply face heavy punishment.
“People are getting cynical and suspicious because the punishment appears selective,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, Chow said the Emergency Ordinance should be seen from two angles, that of public health and politics.
He said they have no qualms if the Emergency proclamation empowers public health measures and resources.
“Where is the convincing reason for the people that Parliament and state assemblies need to be suspended, and how far has this action helped in preventing the pandemic?
“The proclamation must be used to win the war against Covid-19,” he said.
Amirudin said the government should accept and consider the views of health experts.
“We know the MCO can help save lives, but we need to consider the livelihoods of stall owners or fishermen who are also struggling. We need to strike a balance.”
Aminuddin noted that the number of Covid-19 infections is still high despite the Emergency proclamation and MCO.
