Four-month-old from Sabah is the youngest casualty in M’sia

PUTRAJAYA: A four-month-old infant in Sabah is the youngest casualty out of 826 people in the country who succumbed to Covid-19.

The child was said to be suffering from a heart disease, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah reported in his daily Covid-19 press statement.

The infant boy, a Malaysian, passed away at Hospital Tawau and is one of the 17 Covid-19 deaths announced yesterday.

“Today’s deaths included four cases in Selangor, three each in Sabah and Sarawak, two each in Johor and Pahang, one each in Kelantan, Melaka and Negri Sembilan.

“Fifteen of these cases involved Malaysians while two were foreigners. The Health Ministry would like to convey its condolences to the family members,” said Dr Noor Hisham.

The other deaths were of those aged between 34 and 82.

Three of the 17 fatalities were those who had been declared as “dead on arrival” (DOA) cases.

One of them was a 34-year-old foreigner who was declared DOA at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan in Kuantan, Pahang.

The man had no history of any comorbidities.

Another DOA case is of a 65-yearold man at Hospital Muadzam Shah in Rompin, Pahang, who had a history of diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and dyslipidemia.

Another involved a 35-year-old man at Hospital Banting in Selangor.

The deceased suffered from obesity and gout.

Meanwhile, the number of Covid19 cases in the country remained high with 4,571 new infections recorded.

Selangor continued to be the state with the most number of Covid-19 cases, at 2,056 – about 45% of the country’s total yesterday.

“About 66% of Selangor’s cases were uncovered from infection clusters and contact tracing activities,” said Dr Noor Hisham.

The Health Ministry has uncovered 10 new infection clusters, which takes the total number of active ones to 421.

Six of the new clusters are linked to workplace infections while four are community outbreaks.

The cumulative total of confirmed cases in the country is now 231,483.

There were 4,092 patients who were discharged, bringing the total recoveries to 181,886.

There are 48,771 active Covid-19 cases currently being treated at the country’s hospitals and quarantine centres.

Of that figure, 308 patients are in intensive care units, with 135 on ventilator support.
