“I was sitting in the house when I saw the porcupines outside. They piqued my interest and I decided to keep them to overcome the boredom.

“I don’t eat the porcupines but they have become my ‘therapy’ in occupying my time,” he said.

Mat Lia said he would spend hours daily playing with the porcupines besides bathing and feeding them fruits and vegetables.

“I clean their shelter every day,” he said, adding that most of his visitors were surprised to find that the porcupines did not smell and that their quills were shiny.
